Fatal Connecticut Car Accidents Leave Single Parents In Their Wake
When New Haven County parents get in their vehicle, they often do not realize that they could not come home to their spouse or young children if they are involved in a car accident. Statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau have long shown that children raised by two parents have more educational and financial advantages over those raised in a single-parent household. However, some parents do not have a choice but to raise their children on their own after their spouse or the mother of father of their children is involved in a fatal car accident.
Car accidents create single parents
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, fatalities caused by car accidents are one of the leading causes of death in the U.S. In 2010, the CDC released a study that found that for every 100,000 people in the U.S., 12 were killed in a fatal auto collision. These accidents can leave spouses without their partner and children without one of their parents.
Recently, a man in Connecticut became a single parent when the mother of his children was killed in a car accident. The woman was pregnant and was the mother to three children, leaving the father to take over the care of his children by himself. The accident not only killed the mother in the vehicle, but also injured the woman’s three children that she had in the minivan with her, says Eyewitness News 3.
In the aftermath of the accident, one of the children was able to get his sister out of the car but then had to lay the ground due to his injuries. The father of these children is dedicated to letting others know what type of mother this woman was and is doing his best to take over the care of these children.
The challenges of single parenthood
Being a single-parent to a child or multiple children can be extremely challenging. Many single parents are responsible for working to support the children while also caring for them by themselves. Although it may be difficult, single parents should try to:
- Give each one of their children individual attention each day, even if it is only for a little bit
- Not rely on the older children to take care of their siblings and find quality child care
- Set house rules and be diligent in enforcing them
- Take the time to get proper sleep and plan activities with friends
- Be open to the help of other parents, relatives and friends
Being a single parent may be overwhelming and cause stress and fatigue, but single parents should try to remain positive when interacting with their children.
